For those of you who do not know May is Mental Health Awareness Month. I know this is a blog about juicing but I think we should be concerned about all aspects of our health including out mental health as well as our physical health. There is a problem in America when it comes to talking about mental health in America. Many people find it difficult to talk about even to their loved ones if they are facing anxiety or depression. However these are common problems and millions of Americans are facing these problems each day. There have been many scientist and doctors studying the relationship between physical and mental health and how one can affect the other. I found a great article on psychcentral.com discussing the relationship. Many people with mental illnesses especially bipolar, depression, and schizophrenia have shown to have more health problems than people who do not have these problems. Also people who have depression and also heart disease may be harder to diagnose with heart disease because their depression symptoms are masking the heart disease symptoms. This can be very dangerous. On the other hand. If you don't have a mental illness or it runs in your family yet you aren't showing symptoms it is important to stay active and care for yourself more than the average person. Staying active and working out outside of your house whether it be at the gym or outside is important. This causes you to get out and socialize. You don't want to seclude yourself from others. Humans are social creatures and we need social interaction. This is just one way to be proactive.
Some scientist say depression is genetic,some say it's caused by your environment and some say it's a combination of both. However, whatever it maybe you should care for yourself mentally and physically.
It has also been shown that people who take anti-depressants or anti-seizure medications like abilify or serauil are likely to gain weight. It hasn't been agreed upon whether or not these medications make you gain weight because they cause fat cells to store more fat or because the cause craving or a little of both but this could be another reason that people with depression have health problems. Juicing is a great way for those people to take in more nutrients and shed a few pounds. Also it will help with cravings. You can drink as much juice as you want!!
